INTANGIBLE ASSETS |
5. INTANGIBLE ASSETS The Company’s intangible assets consist of core deposits, goodwill, and other intangibles arising from acquisitions. The Company has determined that core deposit intangibles have finite lives and amortizes them over their estimated useful lives. Core deposit intangibles are being amortized over the period of expected benefit, which ranges from 4 to 10 years, using an accelerated method. Other amortizable intangible assets are being amortized over the period of expected benefit, which ranges from 4 to 10 years, using various methods. In accordance with ASC 350, Intangibles-Goodwill and Other, the Company reviews the carrying value of indefinite lived intangible assets at least annually or more frequently if certain impairment indicators exist. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the economy and created significant volatility in the financial markets. The volatility in the financial markets has adversely affected the Company’s expected future cash flows, due to the lower interest rate environment and other factors, and resulted in a decline in the market price of the Company’s common stock, along with others in the financial services industry. The Company performed its annual impairment testing in the second quarter of 2020 and, while the fair value of the reporting unit declined from the prior test, the Company determined that there was no impairment to its goodwill or intangible assets. In the normal course of business, the Company routinely monitors the impact of the changes in the financial markets and includes these assessments in the Company’s goodwill impairment process. Amortization expense of intangibles for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2020 totaled $4.1 million and $12.7 million, respectively; and for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2019 totaled $4.8 million and $13.9 million, respectively. As of September 30, 2020, the estimated remaining amortization expense of intangibles is as follows for the years ending (dollars in thousands):
